It Just Doesn’t Stop Doing Backflips…I Think This Hamster Is Broken

by onMarch 27, 2016

At first we thought this was the cutest thing we’ve ever seen. Then we found out the cause.

This adorable little hamster appears to just love flipping off of it’s food bowl. It’s seriously one of the cutest things we’ve seen. The only thing is that this behavior is not caused by the hamsters joy for flipping. It’s actually a neurological disease caused by inbreeding. Unfortunately, this hamster does this as a compulsory disorder.

It is a genetic neurological disorder. This back flipping behavior largely affects the Dwarf hamsters. The same thing affects them where they just keep running around in circles. These disorders usually start to manifest when the animal is about 2 – 3 months old. It won’t hurt itself, but it will become progressively worse as she gets older. It is a compulsive disorder, she cannot stop doing it.”

Fortunately, there’s a good chance the the hamster will live a long healthy life as sometimes these conditions do not affect the hamster on a continuous basis. If the condition worsens though, it could cause the hamster to continuously tire itself out, causing anorexia, in which case putting it down is the best option.

Regardless though…it’s still really cute.
