You’d probably think hopping on a bike that when turned left goes right and right goes left would be pretty easy right? Well you’re wrong. Our brains subconscious just cannot handle the change in controls. Learning to ride a bike takes some time, and then all the years you spend riding bikes after that reinforces your subconscious/muscle memory even more. When you’re on a bike your hands are constantly making slight adjustments to steering that you are not consciously controlling. Completely reversing what has been engrained in your head as normal leads to complete failure! It’s really amazing. Even after watching all these people fail, there’s a part of me that thinks I could ride it. Really an interesting experiment done by Smarter Every Day/his engineering friends.
Eventually Destin is able to, after 8 months of practice, ride the backwards bike! He essentially had to completely reteach his brain how to ride. Even after 8 months his riding isn’t perfect, slight distractions will cause his brain to revert to it’s original knowledge and throw him off. He even makes his son a little one!
